Taos Artists Beyond: Art Fairs
This winter, Taos artists show their wares in art fairs in New Mexico, Florida and Switzerland

I recently found a statistic that surprised me: Taos County is ranked second on a list of U.S. counties most densely populated with working artists – out-ranked only by Kings County, New York, which includes the Brooklyn art scene. Taos is indeed a place where artists live and work. But when it comes time to take their art to market, many Taos artists sell elsewhere.
This post about Taos artists showing beyond Taos focuses on the phenomenon of art fairs: Kunst 18 Zurich, Art Miami, Art Basel Miami and two New Mexico art markets held in Santa Fe and Albuquerque hotels. Below are a few photos from each fair.

Taos artist Paul O’Connor was part of this Swiss art fair, in Laurent Marthaler Contemporary booth. The fair’s website introduces itself: “Offering an exciting overview over the contemporary art scene, ZĂĽrich’s leading art fair is not only aimed at experienced art collectors, but also at newcomers inviting both of them to discover something new at the approximately 50 galleries in the former ABB halls in Oerlikon. From painting over sculpture and photography to multimedia art, from figurative to abstract, from small to large scale, the choice is extremely wide-ranging and of the highest quality.”

This art fair’s website explains, “In its 29th edition, Art Miami maintains a preeminent position in America’s modern and contemporary art fair market and is globally recognized as a primary destination for the acquisition of the most important works from the 20th and 21st centuries.”

Larry Bell’s art appeared in four gallery booths in Art Basel 2018: Hauser & Wirth LA, Pace Gallery, Anthony Meier Fine Arts and Michael Kohn Gallery. The fair, in its 17th year, says, “Leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa show significant work from the masters of Modern and contemporary art, as well as the new generation of emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, films, and editioned works of the highest quality are on display in the main exhibition hall.”
A note to all Taos artists: please let me know (firstname.lastname@example.org) about your exhibits outside of Taos – where, when, and what you’re showing. I find it amazing how many of you quietly work in this community then take the work to other cities for exhibition. It’s a testament to the creative inspiration of this place.
